Why is Venus called the Morning Star and the Evening Star?

Its orbit lies inside Earth's, so it never strays far from the Sun in our sky. It blazes after sunset for months, then shifts to dazzling pre-dawn brilliance for months — ancient astronomers gave it two names before realizing they were the same world.

Is Venus hotter than Mercury?

Yes — by far. Mercury reaches 430 °C on its sunlit side but has no atmosphere, so nights plunge to −180 °C. Venus's thick CO₂ blanket holds a steady ~465 °C everywhere, day and night.

Why does Venus spin backwards?

Its rotation is retrograde (opposite to its orbit), likely the result of a giant impact or long-term tidal interactions with the Sun early in its history. The Sun rises in the west and sets in the east on Venus.

Could humans ever live there?

Not on the surface — 92 bar of crushing pressure, acid rain and 465 °C rule it out. A speculative idea is cloud cities at ~50 km altitude, where pressure and temperature are surprisingly Earth-like. No such habitat exists today.

Could Venus once have had oceans?
